BABY MASSAGE CLASS
Mom, carrying a baby bag, rolls Baby’s stroller to a stop near a bin full of colorful yoga mats.
MOM
(to baby)
This must be the place. Are you excited?
(Baby bats her arms with excitement)
BABY
You know me, Mom! I love trying new things!
This looks even more fun than our water aerobics class!
INSTRUCTOR
Ok, everyone. Time to start class.
(Reverse angle on the bright and cheerful yoga class. The walls are decorated with instructional yoga posters. Colorful yoga mats line the floor. Along one wall are cubby holes and strollers are parked along the wall. Mothers of all ethnicity sit on their mats, before their babies. The babies lie on a soft towels or blankets, on top of the mats. The moms of younger babies (0-4 months) keep a hand on either side of their babies heads, supporting them. The older babies (9-12 months) lie squirming, as their mothers keep one hand on them at all times. The mothers look prepared and self assured. They each have a pink bottle of baby lotion. They smile at Mom, who takes a yoga mat.)
INSTRUCTOR
Who’s here at Baby Massage for the first time?
(Mom turns to see the smiling instructor)
MOM
That would be me! I’ve never even had a massage myself.
BABY
You’ve never done this before? Maybe we should go!
(Baby reaches towards the exit. The instructor smiles.)
INSTRUCTOR
Well, It’s easy.
BABY
Just like crawling!
INSTRUCTOR
First you’ll need some baby lotion.
(She holds up a bright pink bottle - Johnson’s Baby Lotion)
MOM
I have my own.
(Mom takes her bottle of Johnson’s Baby Lotion out of her bag and opens the lid. The scent of the lotion drifts out of the bottle in pink swirls.... Baby is lying on a blanket covered yoga mat, her clothes are now removed, and she’s wearing a basic white diaper.)
INSTRUCTOR
Be sure to keep your eyes on your baby at all times. Once you take some lotion and warm it in your hands, you should always keep a hand on your baby…
(Mom keeps a hand safely on baby as she reaches for her lotion. Mom pours some in her hand and rubs her hands together.)
INSTRUCTOR
Then begin gently massaging her starting at her toes, legs, and arms...always looking at your baby...
(Mom looks down at Baby and begins to gently massage baby's feet and legs, using her fingers to gently massage Baby's chest. Baby seems to like this.)
BABY
(giggle)
VARIOUS MOM’S
Is that ok, Sweetie? Good Boy.
INSTRUCTOR
Good, very good. Excellent!
Baby starts to smile up at Mom, making eye contact. [Sign of bonding]
MOM
How does that feel?
(The scent of the lotion fills the screen in pink swirls... The pink swirls fade to reveal a luxurious spa decorated in pink. Mom is reclining in a fluffy pink chair. She holds baby safely and securely on her lap.)
BABY
So snuggly! So relaxing!
(Baby smiles as attendants approach. One holds out a pacifier on a pink satin pillow. Another holds out a silver platter of baby rattles. Baby giggles and reaches out for these things.)
ATTENDANT
Your pacifier madam...and rattle.
BABY
(giggle)
INSTRUCTOR
Your massage mademoiselle!
(The instructor appears, center, presenting the bottle of Johnson’s Baby lotion. Again, the scent swirls out in pink. We fade back to reality.... Mom now massages lotion into baby’s shoulders and across her chest in circular motion.)
INSTRUCTOR
Now work your way across the chest, down her arms....
(Mom massages baby’s chest in a heart shaped motion. Baby smiles up at Mom. [Sign of bonding])
MOM
You like that, don’t you?!
BABY
(giggle)
I feel like a new baby!
(Then moves her hands down baby’s arms. Mom massages Baby’s and each one of her little fingers. After she does this, Baby reaches up to touch Mom’s face. [sign of bonding])
BABY
We should do this more often!
(Then Mom massages her legs and feet, getting each toe. Baby smiles up at Mom [sign of bonding]and bats her arms happily.)
MOM
(to Baby)
Looks like somebody enjoyed her massage!
BABY
It’s me!
(Baby laughs and coos [sign of bonding] and reaches out to her mom who is holding the bottle of Johnson's Baby Lotion. Baby tries to squeeze the bottle along with mom, filling the screen with pink. (Note, it is the mom that squeezes the bottle, Baby just tries.)
